The major remodelling work on Palma's Paseo Marítimo will begin in October.

This is a large-scale project for one of Palma's most emblematic and busiest seaside areas, which with this reform aims to continue along the lines of "returning to the values" of the city, bringing to life both the historic quarter and the great jewels of Palma such as the Royal Palace of the Almudaina, the old city walls, the Auditorium, La Lonja, Es Baluart, the Congress Palace, the Consulate of the Sea and the cathedral.

The aim is to recover for the pedestrian what was originally intended for the car in the 1950s as a connection route between the new port (Porto Pí) and the old quay (La Lonja). The car was indispensable and the trend in practically all cities was to create fast lanes to speed up, and in Palma at the end of the 1970s up to six lanes were created for the increasingly used cars. This turned Palma's Paseo Marítimo into a motorway overlooking the sea rather than a Paseo Marítimo as a place to stroll along the coastline.

The Balearic Islands Port Authority confirmed at the beginning of July that it plans to begin the remodelling work in October, with a duration of 20 months and a budget of 38 million euros, which will bring Palma closer to the sea and transform the promenade into a large space where different uses can be shared in a privileged setting, from strolling, doing sports, enjoying nature to the very seafaring tradition of the capital of Mallorca.

The architect Elías Torres, who is responsible for this ambitious project, plans to eliminate vehicle lanes, widen the pavements to ten metres and create terraces and children's playgrounds, as well as doubling the number of trees and palm trees. Ramps will be installed and bridges will be removed to improve the connection with neighbourhoods such as Es Jonquet, El Terreno and Plaça de Sant Elm. The number of parking spaces will be reduced to 1,000, but they will be compensated with a large car park that is already underway.

"A sustainable project that will turn Palma's Paseo Marítimo into a large open-air leisure area all year round".
